It's a dilemma

I started last week researching expat blogs particularly Americans living in France and was pleasantly surprised to find there are many. My one letdown is all seem to be young, newly married, just gave birth or raising young children which are of course the center of their lives right now. I understand, but…

My child rearing years have been over for a long time. I’m not domestic in the least and find it all quite boring (not you, the subject matter). I’m not even good as a mentor…believe me. If I ever did know a thing worth knowing about raising children and cooking it’s long left my brain for other things.

When the cat hair begins to float around in front of my face I know I need to vacuum and dust. When I get hungry I look for the easiest and quickest thing I can find so I can get on with my work. I occasionally like to do a cooking thing but it’s rare. One day I’m going to learn to make couscous just because I love the stuff but that’s one day.

What I want to know is where the dissatisfied, eccentric, menopausal people are? I can’t be the only one.

And why do most American expats live in Paris?

A tout à l'heure

Well I'm not newly married, definitely not domesticated and not raising children! Not menopausal yet though - hehe.

As for American expats...that's a really good question - why do they all live in Paris? Actually, there are TONS here in Frankfurt as well!

Hey, I love Paris but I'm a bit frustrated that there aren't more Americans in my area and Hamburg is really too far. ;)

Thanks for stopping by again. :)

Dear Manicblu,

I am a dissatisfied, eccentric menopausal woman. I am still raising my children, although they would disagree...I used to be able to cook when my husband was around but now I just point the girls in the direction of the fridge/cooker/supermarket and tell them to get on with it.

I do housework when I can't find the cat anymore...:-)

Ahh Gigi,I don't feel so alone now. Thanks for stopping by. I spent a bit of time on your site last evening reading. What a talented writer you are. You obviously don't market yourself or you'd have tons more readers.

I'm definitely not into raising children or cooking... I've been noticing a lot of blogs are what you described too. Reading them just makes me not want to have kids even more!

I think so many Americans move to Paris because there's such a large support system there for English-speakers. Plus Paris has the largest numbers of Americans anywhere else in the world (besides the US, of course). I have absolutely no interest in living there though. I prefer la campagne. :)

I like the atmosphere of Paris..it does have it's place and when I visit I think I would really like living there. But, I know I'm a country girl at heart and would soon miss the green fields and quiet.

I fit the description and lived in France until two and half weeks ago...c'est la vie! I still think of myself as an expat, though. I'm just on the 4 year plan (child to get through high school), then I'm looking to return, if they'll have me back. Who knows what will be going on by then.

You'll find more folks...and they are very interesting with lots of stories to tell!

Meilleurs voeux!!

Hi there! I've just found your blog, and I didn't realize you'd been around already for a few months...

Well, I've been living in France for about 5 years total, with a few years before that back and forth, and I actually live outside of Paris, in the suburbs... I kinda miss living in the city, in the village atmosphere with all the other expats, but as I'm sure you know, the price of life and apartments is so high! So my boyfriend and I had to move a little further outside the city.

We've actually been considering leaving the région parisienne, but we're still not sure yet -- we need to be able to find work!

But I do hope to have children someday...

Otherwise, I have my tough moments too, so I can relate! Where do you live in the countryside?
