Leaving France

Strange how life changes so quickly and without warning. Life in France has been a scenic wonder and my health is great but employment and housing have been non-existent and horrible.

I have a friend who lives in Toronto who has offered a spare bedroom for as long as I need it and I'm going to accept. I've only traveled once and that was from the US to France. I was newly married and in a dreamstate. I don't remember a thing. He took care of everything. I remember lots of stops, having to queue and a lot of walking. I imagine horrible nightmares of getting lost and missing my flight.

I will now be traveling alone on a very long trip and although I am excited about the move the flight is giving me quivers. I don't know what to expect. I'm having a problem finding the best place to buy a ticket. Using Google I'm hit with CHEAP FLIGHTS which somehow make me think 'might get you there'.

I know I've read about things you can and cannot take on board these days, but again I have no idea. I'm wanting to go as soon as possible while the weather is nice. If any of you can give me helpful links and advice I would surely appreciate it.

Ooo, how exciting. How long will your long trip be for?

Have you tried www.expedia.fr to book your flight?

As for what you can and cannot take on board, well, in terms of liquids, you're only allowed to take 100ml bottles of liquids (unless it's babyfood, or medication etc), and these 100ml containers must be put in a little transparent zip lock bag.
Oh - and no nail clippers, nail files or tweezers either! No scissors and any other obvious items like that. You'll probably be able to find more info on the website of your airline.
I've found that some airports/airlines are stricter than others. And I think it also depends on where you're flying to.

Hope you find a cheap ticket!

I have checked expedia and several others since I posted this. It doesn't look like there is such a thing as a cheap ticket. The cheapest I've found is $1200 with just 1 stop. If I stop more than this I just know I will get turned around. I have no confidence in myself as a traveler. ;)

If things work out in Canada I have no plans to come back to France except for a visit. I'm really tired of living in a cave.

I hope to be leaving by the end of this month..I hope.

Is the 1200EUR for a 1 way ticket or return? If it's 1 way, then I find that 1 way tickets tend to be more expensive than returns.

If it's a return ticket - ooo, you're unlucky. we got our return tickets to Australia for about the same price.

Have you tried your local travel agent? Nouvelles Frontieres?
Sometimes they might have access to cheaper tickets as well. Good luck!

I think you're very brave. I live in a cave too...I have done for the past six years. My husband couldn't stand it and left (moved to Perpignan to a studio flat belonging to his parents, and next door to his sister...) - but I'm still here with three children. To tell you the truth, I'm afraid of moving - even though I don't think I'd get a flat, with what I earn. This may be a cave but at least it's in a safe part of town...it takes courage to change and I'm not sure that I've got enough.

I wish you all the best, whatever you do...

I understand, Gigi. I think you're the brave one raising 3 children alone. And yes, there is something to be said for security especially when you have children. When you're alone it's easier. When the time is right your time will come. :)
